What is an influencer?
Let’s start with the basics although I’m sure most of you know the answer to this question. An influencer is a person who, thanks to his or her presence and influence on social networks, can affect the decisions, opinions, or behaviors of an audience. Often endowed with a large number of subscribers or followers, the influencer has built up a relationship of trust with his or her community by regularly sharing content, be it photos, videos, or even personal stories on a blog.
But this role goes far beyond simple publications since being an influencer also means being a source of inspiration, information, and sometimes even a role model for thousands, even millions of people. Through their authenticity, expertise, or simply their charisma, these individuals have succeeded in creating a strong bond with their audience, making them key players in the world of digital marketing and communication.
When this relationship of trust is established with an engaged audience, it quickly attracts the attention of brands, which can then propose different types of partnership. Companies see this interaction as an opportunity to promote their products or services to a targeted audience that has already been won over.
In return, influencers are remunerated for their collaboration, whether in the form of direct payments, free products, or other benefits. It’s this synergy between influencers and brands that creates considerable financial potential, but I’ll come back to that later.
Note that I’ve already written a generic article on the world of influence, but here I’ll be focusing more specifically on the creation and management of TikTok and Instagram accounts, as well as all the other interesting aspects relating to these social media platforms. So, don’t hesitate to go and read my first article in addition to this one as you’re sure to find other valuable information there too.
What are the steps to becoming an influencer on Instagram or TikTok?
Let’s get straight to the heart of the matter and see what steps you need to take to become an Instagram influencer or TikTok influencer.
1Choose your niche: find your passion and your audience
Starting out as an influencer without a clearly defined niche is a bit like sailing without a compass: You can end up wandering around with no real goal or direction. Finding your niche means identifying that subject, that passion that drives you, and for which you’re ready to create content regularly and with motivation still intact. It could be fashion, gastronomy, travel, sports, video games, or even more specific fields such as film photography or bonsai culture. The important thing is to be passionate and authentic.
Once you’ve identified your passion, it’s just as crucial to know who your audience is. Who is your target audience? What are their interests and concerns? Understanding your audience enables you to adapt your post content, create genuine interaction, and ultimately, build an engaged community. Because an influencer’s success lies not just in the followers count but in the quality of the engagement and exchanges he or she maintains with them.
2Create authentic, high-quality content
Social networks such as Instagram and TikTok are already bursting at the seams with content of all kinds, and new quality publications are being added every second. It’s a real challenge to stand out from the crowd. Authenticity is the key to building a solid, loyal relationship with your community.
Being real, staying true to yourself, and sharing real experiences helps build trust. This means being transparent about collaborations, avoiding overacting or staging supposedly “spontaneous” moments, remaining consistent in your opinions and recommendations, and also being honest about your experiences, whether of a product tested, a place visited, or a situation experienced.
Quality, meanwhile, is not to be neglected. Well-crafted, thoughtful, and aesthetically pleasing content attracts more eyeballs. Investing time in research, creation, and editing is essential. Whether it’s a photo, video, or any other form of publication, every detail counts. Good quality shows a real commitment to your community and a passion for what you do.
So, learn how to take great photos, make dynamic video edits, and don’t hesitate to work with the pros if you’re lacking in one area or another. You’ll find video or photo editors, copywriters, and other talented freelancers on platforms like Fiverr, UpWork, PeoplePerHour or ComeUp.
3Develop a growth strategy
Working on your presence on Instagram and TikTok requires a strategy that is both planned and thought through. It’s not just about publishing on a regular basis but also about understanding the specificities and opportunities offered by each platform.
On Instagram, consistency is key. This means a harmonious feed, a polished bio, and interactive stories. The judicious use of hashtags also helps to increase visibility and reach a wider audience. It’s also advisable to exploit all Instagram’s features, such as reels or IGTV (now called Instagram Video), to captivate your audience in a different way. Engaging in discussions, responding to comments and creating collaborations with other influencers can also propel your presence.
TikTok, on the other hand, is a platform focused on viral and creative content. To stand out, it’s essential to follow trends while adding your own personal touch. Using popular music, taking part in challenges, or creating your own trends can all prove fruitful. Analyzing the statistics provided by TikTok is also crucial to understanding which types of content work best and at what times to publish.
In both cases, patience and perseverance are essential. Growth may be slow, but a well-executed strategy, combined with authentic, quality content, will be the key to success. And if you have the budget, you might consider promoting some of your posts to give your account a boost, garnering more likes and also new subscribers.
How can you monetize your account?
Being able to make a living from this activity obviously involves earning money. As I told you at the start of this article, brand partnerships are one way of monetizing your Instagram or Tik Tok account, but there are others, as we’ll now see.
1Brand partnerships
Brand partnerships are one of the most common and lucrative methods of monetizing your presence on social networks. In essence, a brand partnership means collaborating with companies to promote their products or services.
In exchange, the influencer may be paid financially, or may receive only free products, or other benefits such as trips or invitations to exclusive events. This will depend on factors such as the popularity and quality of the content broadcast.
To establish a successful partnership, it’s essential to find brands that match your niche and values. A forced or inauthentic collaboration can easily be spotted by your audience and damage your credibility. A partnership with a motor oil brand when you’re talking about cosmetics, for example, should be avoided. So, it’s important to prioritize quality over quantity in all cases.
Here are a few ways to find these partnership opportunities:
- Direct search: Identify the brands you’d like to work with and approach them directly, either by e-mail or via social networks. Don’t hesitate to create demos to show them what you have to offer in a more visual way.
- Dedicated platforms: There are many online platforms that connect influencers with brands looking to promote their products or services. Even micro-influencers can find valuable partnerships here. I’ve included some interesting options at the end of this article.
- Networking: Attending events, trade shows, or conferences related to your niche can enable you to meet brand representatives directly. These can also be local events where you’ll find companies and businesses willing to work with you.
- Be active and visible: Sometimes it’s the brands themselves that will come to you if they feel your profile matches their needs. So, make sure you have a clear Instagram bio, a nice profile picture, a visible contact email, and quality content that reflects what you have to offer.
Finally, before signing any agreement, read the terms and conditions carefully. Make sure you understand your obligations, the proposed remuneration, and the brand’s expectations. Above all, stay true to yourself and your audience because it’s this authenticity that makes you a strong influencer.

2Other forms of monetization
There are many, and here are a few of the most popular examples, but you’re free to find others.
- Selling products or services: If you have a special talent or unique product from your personal brand to offer, you can use Instagram or TikTok to promote it. This could be selling photos, courses in the form of videos or podcasts, physical products you’ve created yourself or just bought elsewhere but find particularly interesting. And to find out how to sell on the web, read my article here.
- Affiliates: Some companies offer affiliate programs. This means you can promote a product and earn a commission on every sale made through your unique link. I’ve written a fairly comprehensive article on affiliate marketing, so check it out if you’re interested.
- Sell presets or filters: If you’re good at photography or video creation, you can sell your own presets for apps like Adobe Lightroom or custom filters for Instagram and TikTok.
- Organize paid webinars or workshops: If you’re an expert in a specific field, why not organize online training sessions for your subscribers?
- Use third-party platforms: Platforms like Patreon, Buy Me A Coffee or Ko-fi allow your most loyal subscribers to support you financially in exchange for exclusive content.
- Selling NFTs: NFTs enable influencers to sell unique digital versions of their work, whether photos, videos or any other digital content. Each NFT is authenticated by the blockchain, guaranteeing its uniqueness and ownership. It’s an innovative way to monetize exclusive content while offering your fans something truly unique and valuable. Here again, you can read my article on the subject if you’re interested.
Native remuneration on Tik Tok and Instagram
TikTok and Instagram pay content creators directly, and the methods of payment differ between the two platforms.
On TikTok, content creators are remunerated via the “Creator Fund“. This fund is only available to creators who have accumulated over 100,000 views in the last 30 days. Eligible videographers receive regular monthly payments based on the performance of their content. However, it’s important to note that the revenue generated by TikTok can be perceived as derisory by some, even if their videos rack up millions of views.
As for Instagram, the platform recently introduced several features to remunerate content creators. They can now make live videos and receive donations from their followers. They can also activate ads when they retransmit their lives as IGTV (Instagram Video) to earn additional remuneration from advertisers.
Note that the revenue generated on these platforms can vary considerably depending on factors such as the number of subscribers, audience engagement, and the way each piece of content is promoted by the platform.
Which is right for you?
With the growing popularity of Instagram and TikTok, the question arises: which of these platforms is best suited to your goals as an influencer? To answer this question, we need to analyze several key criteria.
- Your target audience: If you’re looking to reach a young, dynamic audience eager for entertaining content, TikTok will probably be the best choice. The platform is popular with Gen Z (1996 – 2010) but is also increasingly attracting “millennials” (Gen Y, 1980 – 1995). Instagram, on the other hand, has a more diverse user base in terms of age, which can be beneficial if you’re aiming for a broader or more mature target (hence with greater purchasing power).
- Type of content: If you excel at creating short, creative, and trendy videos, TikTok is for you. On the other hand, if you have an inclination for photography, storytelling through images, or want to share longer-form content such as tutorial videos, Instagram will be more suited.
- Engagement and growth: TikTok offers a unique opportunity for virality. Even with few subscribers, a video can potentially reach millions of people if it’s well received. Instagram, while offering a more stable way to grow your following, may require more time to build a solid community, especially if you’re just starting out.
- Long-term goals: If you’re looking at influencer as a long-term career, it’s essential to consider the sustainability of the platforms. Instagram, with its many features and ability to adapt, has proven its longevity. TikTok, although it has experienced explosive growth, is more recent and its future evolution remains uncertain, especially given that some states are considering outright banning it on their territory.
Ultimately, the choice between Instagram and TikTok will depend on your talents, preferences, and goals. It may also make sense to be active on both platforms to benefit from the best of both worlds. After all, as an influencer, adapting and evolving is essential to staying relevant and connected to your audience.
The benefits of being an influencer
Being an influencer, and the relationship you’ll have with fans, offers rewarding moments and unique opportunities that can bring you deep personal and professional satisfaction. Here’s a list of the main benefits of this activity:
- Creative freedom: You have the freedom to create content according to your passions and inspirations. It’s a platform for expressing your individuality, sharing your talents and interests.
- Flexibility: The influencer’s life offers great flexibility in terms of working hours and location. Whether you prefer to work from home, from a coffee shop or while traveling, whether you’re a morning person or a night owl, you have the freedom to choose.
- Unique opportunities: Collaborations with brands can offer unique experiences, whether it’s travel, access to exclusive events, or the chance to test products before their official release.
- Impact and reach: Influencers have the ability to positively impact their audience, whether by sharing knowledge, raising awareness of causes, or simply bringing joy and good times.
- Networking: The influencer marketing industry offers countless networking opportunities. Collaborating with other creators, brands, or experts can open doors to new opportunities and friendships.
- Monetization: In addition to collaborating with brands, being an influencer offers numerous monetization opportunities, as we’ve seen above, whether through product sales, affiliations, advertising, or even NFTs.
- Personal development: The journey of an influencer requires constant learning and evolution. This can lead to considerable personal development, whether it’s improving communication skills, learning about marketing, or running a business.

The challenges of being an influencer
Being an influencer isn’t just about perfect photos, viral videos, and collaborations with prestigious brands. Like any career, it’s littered with challenges and obstacles that require resilience and a healthy dose of perseverance.
- Pressure and expectations: Having a community that follows and comments on your daily life can create enormous pressure. There’s a constant expectation to publish new and relevant content. What’s more, maintaining a uniform image or aesthetic can sometimes feel like being limited and going in circles.
- Criticism and trolls: Online exposure inevitably brings its share of criticism, whether constructive or malicious. Learning how to deal with negative comments, and knowing the difference between constructive criticism and a malicious troll, is crucial to your mental health. Whatever the case, always remain courteous and don’t hesitate to block the user if things get toxic.
- Work-life balance: When your personal life is at the heart of the content you offer, establishing a boundary between your work and your private life can be difficult. Knowing when to disconnect, when to share, and when to keep moments to yourself is essential to avoid burnout.
- Fluctuations and instability: Popularity on social networks can be fleeting. What’s trending one day may not be the next. Monetization can also fluctuate according to trends, algorithms, and collaborations. Having a flexible and diversified strategy is therefore crucial.
Faced with these challenges, it’s essential for influencers to remember why they started this business in the first place. Reconnecting with your passion, your community, and your values will help you navigate through the tough times.
How do I deal with trolls?
As I said, sooner or later you’re going to have to deal with them. And when faced with negative or aggressive comments, it’s essential to maintain a professional and benevolent attitude, even if this isn’t always easy. You need to understand that, very often, these reactions are not a personal attack on you but a reflection of the commenter’s state of mind or frustrations.
So, before responding, take a moment to assess the relevance of the comment: Is it constructive criticism (even if awkwardly worded) or just a baseless attack? If it’s constructive, consider responding with gratitude, recognizing the opportunity to improve your content. But if the comment is simply malicious, it may be best to ignore, or in extreme cases, block the user to preserve your sanity and the positive environment of your business. And don’t hesitate to report it if the attack is violent.
In any case, bear in mind that every influencer, no matter how successful, faces this kind of reaction and that the most important thing is not to let it affect your passion and motivation. Always try to remain zen, and don’t hesitate to take a few days out when necessary.

Respect the rules to avoid the ban
Navigating the world of social media as an influencer requires great caution. Each platform has its own rules, and failure to follow them can lead to a temporary or even permanent ban. Not only does getting banned mean losing an essential communication channel with your community, it can also damage your image and credibility—not to mention the financial losses it can entail. Here are a few useful tips to follow.
1What to avoid
- Inappropriate content: Images or videos of a violent, hateful or adult nature can quickly lead to a ban.
- Copyright infringement: Publishing content that isn’t yours without permission or crediting the source can result in immediate sanctions.
- Spammy behavior: Automated comments, excessive mentions or misuse of hashtags can be frowned upon by platforms.
- Fake followers and likes: Buying followers or likes is strongly discouraged. Platforms can often detect these activities and penalize you accordingly.
2How to avoid being banned
- Know the rules: Each platform has its own terms of service. Take the time to read and understand them.
- Interact naturally: Focus on authentic interactions and avoid automation.
- Create original content: While getting inspired, make sure that what you publish is unique and your own.
3What to do if you’re banned
- Contact support: The first step is to approach the platform’s customer service department. Ask for clarification on the reason for the ban and how you can remedy it.
- Admit your mistakes: If you’ve broken the rules, acknowledging your wrongdoing and showing your willingness to abide by the guidelines in the future can help.
- Have a plan B: Consider other platforms or means of communication to keep in touch with your community. A website, newsletter, or other social platform may be alternatives during the suspension period. Also consider creating a secondary account on the same platform.
Adopting a respectful, authentic, and informed approach will protect you from many pitfalls. Being an influencer requires a certain amount of responsibility, so make sure you act accordingly.
The challenge of breaking into a competitive world
Becoming an influencer today presents unprecedented challenges due to a saturated market in many fields. Sectors such as cosmetics and make-up, fashion, bodybuilding and fitness, cooking, and travel are inundated with players looking to make their mark. Faced with such enormous competition, breaking through can be a real challenge.
So, how do you stand out in this sea of content? The first step is to find an original angle and maintain a certain authenticity. In a digital world where everything seems to have been seen and seen again, inventiveness, sincerity, and transparency are extremely valuable assets. This can mean sharing personal challenges, adopting a unique humorous approach or any other particularly distinctive style.
Secondly, you need to dig deep to find a niche that has yet to be exploited. If fashion is saturated, how about specializing in sustainable or ethical fashion? Rather than sharing classic recipes, why not focus on lesser-represented world cuisines? Van travel, local crafts, or permaculture are all areas that still offer great opportunities for those ready to get involved. But don’t forget that you need to have a genuine interest in the subject(s) you’re tackling.
In short, despite increased competition, opportunities still exist. The key lies in the search for originality, genuine passion, and the determination to offer something truly unique.
Avoid divisive subjects?
Tackling divisive subjects as an influencer can not only polarize your audience but also affect your public image and professional relationships. If you choose to tackle these topics, it’s essential to do so with tact, respect, and prior research. Here are just a few of the divisive topics that are best avoided or approached with the utmost caution:
- Religion: Religious beliefs are deeply personal and can provoke passionate reactions. Whether interreligious or between believers and atheists, it sometimes only takes a small spark to ignite your comment space.
- Politics: Taking a stand on political issues, particularly in a tense climate, can divide some of your audience. This is especially true during election periods (presidential, regional, etc.).
- Issues of gender and sexual orientation: While these topics are (fortunately) gaining in visibility and acceptance, they remain highly divisive and even controversial in some communities and regions.
- Health and medicine: Opinions on vaccines, alternative medicine, mental health, etc., can be divisive (as we’ve seen since the COVID19 crisis). Avoid giving medical advice if you are not qualified to do so, unless based on sound scientific sources.
- Racial and ethnic issues: Debates about racism, cultural identity, and related issues can be very sensitive. The same goes for topics having to do with nationalism or ethnic identity.
- Animal rights and veganism: Although these are important causes, opinions can vary considerably, with passionate arguments on both sides (even debates between vegans and vegetarians can quickly degenerate).
- Climate change and the environment: While the majority of scientists agree on climate change, the subject can nevertheless be polarizing, particularly when it comes to solutions (e.g. pro vs. anti-nuclear).
It’s important to remember that every influencer has their own audience, with their own values and beliefs. If you choose to tackle a divisive subject, make sure you do so in a way that is informed, empathetic, and open to dialogue. Above all, avoid peremptory statements! Responsible communication can help create productive discussion rather than division.

16 Tips and Tricks for Success
We’re almost at the end of this article, but before we part ways, let me give you a few more tips that will help you succeed as an influencer or influencer.
- Use short formats: Show the behind-the-scenes of your day via Instagram Stories or short TikToks to offer an authenticity that traditional posts can lack.
- Create a content calendar: Having a monthly or weekly calendar of future posts will help you stay consistent and anticipate important moments like holidays or special events.
- Regularity and frequency of posts: Publishing frequently and regularly not only helps keep your audience engaged but also improves your visibility across platforms. Social media algorithms tend to favor accounts that update their content regularly, ensuring better reach.
- Engage after publication: Algorithms often favor content that receives rapid interaction. So, take 30 minutes after each post to respond to comments or interact with your community.
- Use filters sparingly: Filters can enhance a photo, but excessive use can make it too “artificial” or even “fake”. Opt for retouching that makes a real improvement but without going overboard.
- Cross-collaborations: Find complementary influencers and organize “takeover” sessions where you manage each other’s accounts for a day, thus broadening your visibility.
- A/B testing your posts: Try posting at different times of day to find the best time to post, and use different captions and visuals to see what resonates best with your audience.
- Interactive stories: Use polls or quizzes in your stories or any other possible form to stimulate interaction and thus get feedback from your community.
- Don’t neglect the text: A beautiful photo attracts the eye, but a well-written caption can reinforce your message and further engage. Don’t hesitate to use storytelling techniques to multiply the effect tenfold.
- Study your analytics: Check the engagement rate and dive into other statistics on a regular basis to understand what content works best and when. This is crucial to the rapid growth of your TikTok or Instagram account.
- Workshops and feedback: Hold live workshops or Q&A sessions to educate, inform, or simply chat with your community.
- Stay up to date: The world of social media is rapidly evolving. Make sure you stay up to date with the latest trends, challenges, and features.
- Create a signature: Whether it’s a particular pose, a unique hashtag or a caption style, having a “signature” can make your content instantly recognizable.
- Invest in quality equipment: Good lighting or a quality microphone can greatly improve the quality of your content, even if you’re shooting with a smartphone.
- Use multiple social networks at the same time: This will enable you to increase your visibility tenfold, reach wider audiences, maximize engagement, and diversify your content. It will also offer varied opportunities for monetization and collaboration and, above all, will be a good plan B in the event of a ban.
- Create several accounts: Creating several accounts on the same platform allows you to diversify your content and thus target different audiences but also to test different types of content and strategies and to manage collaborations or promotions in a more segmented way.
Voilà! Keep these tips in mind as they can help you refine your approach, strengthen your bond with your audience and, above all, propel you more quickly to where every influencer dreams of reaching.
Conclusion
As we’ve seen, and contrary to what many people think, being an influencer isn’t just about posting frivolous photos/videos on social networks and getting paid a fortune for it. In fact, it’s much more than just posts and likes since it requires a long-term strategy and a lot of hard work.
To get started, you’ll first need to choose a niche based on what you’re passionate about and what your followers are likely to be interested in, select the right social network(s), publish quality content and then develop a growth strategy. It sounds simple, but you may need to develop certain skills to get there.
In any case, you should be aware that the road to the success you’re hoping for can be a long and bumpy one. There will be moments of intense joy as well as more difficult moments of discouragement. The important thing is always to do things methodically, to constantly optimize every phase of your publications, and to put your heart and soul into them. Then, with patience and perseverance, you too should succeed.
But does this mean that if you do everything properly, it will work for you? That’s probably your biggest concern. Well, it will depend on many factors such as your hard work, your creativity, your level of expertise, your tenacity, or sometimes just your charisma or sense of humor.
People will subscribe to your account if they find that little something that they can’t find elsewhere and that gives them a certain satisfaction (simple joy, laughter, relevant information, etc.). It’s an alchemy that requires different elements, and all you have to do is find the right mix and the right doses.

EcoTips
Environmental and climate change issues are more than ever at the heart of the concerns of this 21st century, which is why I am proposing a few ideas that will enable you to limit the negative impact that the implementation of this idea could have.
These solutions that I suggest are sometimes largely insufficient to compensate for these negative impacts, such as carbon offsetting. Unfortunately, there is not always an ideal and 100% efficient solution, far from it. And if you have others, please do not hesitate to share them in the comments below.
Becoming an influencer can have an indirect impact on the environment. For example, frequent promotion of fashionable or single-use products can encourage excessive consumption, contributing to increased waste and over-consumption of natural resources. What’s more, promoting travel or frequently traveling yourself to exotic destinations can encourage mass tourism, which can disrupt local ecosystems and considerably increase your carbon footprint.
And let’s not forget the photos and the videos you publish online, which require storage on servers that consume large amounts of carbon-constrained electricity most of the time, especially considering the huge volume of content shared daily on social platforms. Because data centers generate heat, requiring cooling systems that further increase their energy consumption.
To limit these negative impacts you could, for example, promote sustainable, ethical, or eco-responsible products but also solutions that help reverse or at least slow down climate change, the erosion of biodiversity, or any other planetary limit that threatens our future.
You can also choose to travel more locally, visiting your region, your country, or any other place you can reach by train rather than by plane. There are certainly plenty of places you’ve never visited but which are well worth the detour.
Finally, even if the environment is one of the most divisive subjects I’ve recommended you avoid tackling, tactfully and sympathetically raising awareness among your followers of the various environmental challenges we face can also help improve the situation.
As for the problem of data stored on servers, there is (as far as I know) no social network that is really concerned about this. So, apart from reducing the frequency of posts or optimizing the size of the files you upload, the only solution I can see is carbon offsetting although that’s far from enough.
You can therefore donate to organizations like carbonfund.org, purprojet.com or goodplanet.org, which invest in environmental projects such as reforestation, renewable energy development and energy efficiency improvements.
